An aerial color photo from above the Hudson River is looking northwest at the S.S. Stevens docked at pier 8 with Castle Point and the campus of Stevens Institute of Technology above it. The vessel was the former S.S. Exochorda of the American Export Lines. The ship was converted to housing at the Bethelem Steel Hoboken Shipyard. Note the red steel frame work erected at the upper left - this was the S.C. Williams Library under construction.

Notes: Archives 2013.001.0074 This floating dormitory houses 175 Stevens Tech students The S. S. Stevens is berthed at a Hudson River pier in Hoboken, N.J., adjacent to the campus of Stevens Institute of Technology. Serving initially as an attack troop transport during World War II and later as a luxury liner, the ship provides both living quarters and recreational facilities. Purchased by Stevens from the U.S. Maritime Commission, the ship is an economical answer to the college’s temporary housing shortage. Built in 1944 by Bethlehem’s Sparrows Point, Md. shipyard, the 14,893-ton vessel was recently converted for use as a dormitory by our ship repair yard at Hoboken. Staterooms were renovated, utilities were reactivated, hull and superstructure were repainted. Some “student-proofing” was also done—such as dismantling the propulsion gear and welding all lifeboats to the davits. This is the first time Bethlehem ever polished up a vessel so it could spend its life at pierside. But in all our operations—of building or repairing ships, of making or rolling steel, of fabricating or erecting steelwork—we have the capability of handling the unique right along with the routine. ==== ==== Dated by source as 1968, but did not name publication.
