An example of typical correspondence in domestic life and provides insight into telephone service costs of that era. The original mailing envelope (metered postage, Sept. 17, 1934) held 4 items: 1. bill: printed; two sections, perforated for separation 2. printed slip with listing of toll charges; hand notation of U.S. government taxes and total 3. printed advertising ink blotter for N.J. Bell promoting intrastate toll calls (18 miles for 15 cents; 42 miles for only 35 cents) 4. payment return envelope (New Jersey Bell Telephone Co., 215 Seventh St., Commercial Dept., Hoboken, N.J.) Allen's phone number: HO3-5449W Her 3 toll charges included two cablegrams (tax on these was 10 cents each).
