Images of chapter 4 (pages 7-15), The New York Game of Base Ball, are shown as they have content related to Hoboken and early games (or matches) at Elysian Fields. ==== Orem's preface: FOREWORD The material in this book was obtained from the contemporary newspaper accounts published the day after the game, meeting or other event, supplemented only by other early writings and by the principal baseball reference book. Generally speaking no conclusions are drawn; such are left to the reader. Baseball mythology is thankfully omitted here; it will be found elsewhere. The research for this volume, and for the two which will follow and which together will cover the period from 1882 to 1900, inclusive, was conducted in the graduate libraries of Stanford University at Palo Alto and the University of California at Los Angeles; the public libraries of the cities of Baltimore, Cincinnati, Louisville, New York, Philadelphia and St. Louis. The granting of access to the old newspaper files and the courteous assistance of the librarians is gratefully acknowledged. Club records and game scores of the very early years were found in AMERICAN PASTIMES, by Peverelly (1866); a few facts were filled in from ATHLETIC SPORTS, by Palmer, Richter, and others (1890). For such details as the ages and first names of the ballplayers of the 1871-1881 period, that principal, and invaluable, baseball reference book, THE OFFICIAL ENCYCLOPEDIA OF BASEBALL, by Turkin and Thompson, was consulted.
