Ballistics comparison microscope formerly owned by the Hoboken Police Department. According to donor, former Police Captain, it was discarded when moving from Hoboken City Hall to One Police Plaza, 1990's. Purchase date not known, but serial numbers place the date of manufacture at circa 1928-1932. Manufactured by Carl Zeiss, Germany. No stock numbers or City of Hoboken identification. Original wood case for mounted unit is lost.
Dual Carl Zeiss Jena monocular microscopes (serial numbers 254919 and 254939; no stock numbers found) mounted on a mahogany wood base with felt on bottom, 10-1/4" deep x 12-1/4" wide; notched for sliding in and out of a storage case (not present); with a removable connecting monocular eyepiece (Carl Zeiss Jena Nr437 - unknown if a stock or serial number) that that sits loosely over the eyepiece of each microscope and allows the two units to used a single microscope for viewing ballistic materials. Overall height with removable eyepiece is circa 12-13"; two brass adjustable bullet mounts; fitted wood case for eyepiece.
Objective on each microscope is 3 (3x?), Carl Zeiss Jena stock number 96-002. Eyepieces on the individual microscopes are same company, 5x, no stock number. The connecting eyepiece uses prisms for a vertical split view of a bullet placed under each microscope. The eyepiece has no stated magnification; each microscope can be focused with the connecting eyepiece in place.
Two brass mounts for bullets are present.
