Object/Artifact
Advertising trade card: The Great Atlantic and Pacific Tea Co.'s Branch Houses in the U.S. Principal Warehouse, 35 and 37 Vesey Street, New York, P.O. Box 290. No date, circa 1881-1884. Card, 3-1/16" wide x 4-5/16" high; color lithograph front with printed type in black on back.
Image is a winged cherub hatching from an egg in a nest. The printing is low quality with poor registration and thus 'blurred.' See 2008.004.0002 for another card with a different subject and better quality printing.
A Hoboken branch is listed on the reverse: 58 Washington Street which would be an old number, circa between First and Second Streets.
The reverse lists the city and addresses of 112 branch houses. According to the official history on the A & P website, the company had 100 branches in 1881 which would date this card from the early 1880's.
