Twelve guage steel links, 100, (7-1/4" except one end link) and rings with brass handles at each end. All links and rings are brazed. Adjustment screw for link at beginning end; diamond shaped brass marker tags marking each 6' 6" foot increment.
Typically used in land survey work by a surveyor and assistant (or one end could be held by a stake.)
Brand end handles, stirrup shape, 3-3/4" wide x 2-1/2" long. Stamped on flat of one handle end: Keuffel & Esser Co., New York. 6413. Stamped on the flat of the other handle end: Tested K&E. 66 Ft Steel No. 12.
Each chain or link is ca. 7-1/4" long with closed brazed eyes (this made them more accurate than ones that were not brazed and could possibly open when pulled tight) at each end. Connected to the next link by an oval ring that is also brazed.
Item number is from before 1905 (33rd edition). From at least 1905 onward, the catalog lists this item as 7781D.
While marked "New York," K&E factories were in Hoboken at the time this item was manufactured.
