Tripod, extension; 1 extension leg & 2 split legs; from 518x product line, made by Keuffel & Esser Co., N.Y. & Hoboken, n.d., ca. 1930-1950.
Object/Artifact
Tripod, extension; with one round extension leg and two split legs; from the 518x product line made by Keuffel & Esser Co., New York & Hoboken, no date, circa 1948-1960. Painted wood (red and white), metal, 59" high. One fixed leg is unpainted and presumed to be a matching replacement. Mount: 3-1/2" x 8 thread. Weathered and worn.
Product number and K&E name do not appear on object. Mount size appears on leg flange.
The split leg style on this tripod has three openings which indicates it is probably not earlier than late 1940s if one uses the depictions of tripods in the K&E catalogs as a guide.
Tripods with one adustable leg were a special order for the several fixed leg (split leg style) tripods that were offered as late as the 1936 38th edition catalog. It appears that the stock number for the regular tripod was used; there was an added charge for substitution of the extension leg for the third fixed leg. Catalogs after one that do not offer the added extension leg, but this point is probably not definitive.
Used for mounting levels, transits, theodolites, etc. The date of this one is only approximate, but it is likely from that era.
K&E had their main office and factories in Hoboken when it was made.
