Object/Artifact
Tripod, fixed leg, split leg style; probably model 5178-8 made by Keuffel & Esser Co., New York & Hoboken, no date, circa 1930s-late 1940s. Painted wood (green), metal, 59" high. Canvas strap. Mount: 3-1/2" x 8 thread.; bakelite thread cap with molded K&E logo used from 1942.
Product number and K&E name do not appear on object except for the cap. While the cap logo appears as a date indicator. While tripods were issued with a cap, the one here could be a later replacement or was married to it by a seller. Mount size appears on leg flange. The canvas strap is a later replacement as a leather strap was standard for all decades.
The split leg style on this tripod has two openings which indicates it is probably not later than 1949 if one uses the depictions of tripods in the K&E catalogs as a guide. In the 41st edition catalog of 1949, the illustration changes from the two leg openings to three. If the dating of the cap is discounted, this tripod could be from the 1930s or possibly earlier.
Used for mounting levels, transits, theodolites, etc. The date of this one is only approximate, but it is likely from that era.
K&E had their main office and factories in Hoboken when it was made.
