Collections Item Detail
Hard hat belonging to longshoreman Donald Red Barrett of Hoboken. N.d., used ca. 1960s-1970s.
Object/Artifact
Hard hat belonging to longshoreman Donald Red Barrett of Hoboken. No date, used ca. 1960s-1970s. Cast yellow plastic with plastic and leather fittings. "Hard Boiled" brand, E.D. Bullard Co., San Francisco; no model number found.
A good example of typical headgear once worn by a union worker at the Hoboken docks. Barrett, known as "Red" Barrett, was a longtime employee at the piers (as well as a photographer who documented them and the work.) He retired sometime in the 1970s. He marked the outside with his initials: D.B. The interior also has marker lettering: Don Barrett Hoboken NJ plus his social security number (which typical of the era was likely used as his employee identification number.)
