John Alexander Harrison Noble (1913-1983) became an Associate of the National Academy of Design in 1951 and was inducted as an Academician in 1969. The work is understood to have been a commission by the International Elevating Company (operators of grain and coal elevator barges in New York harbor) in probably 1951 and was produced in a very limited edition. A business relationship was apparent between the Holland America Line and International Elevating so Roggeveen as the Director of Operations would have been a likely recipient of this print as a gift from International Elevating.
Reverse has dust cover and framer's printed label (Span Craft Studios, 37 Front St., Redbank, N.J.) plus the typewritten gummed adhesive label with limitation statement. Per donor, it was framed by Roggeveen, his grandfather, when living near Red Bank, N.J. in the 1950s.
