Lithographic print: Hon. Cornelius V. Clickener, First Mayor of the City of Hoboken, N.J., May 7, 1855. Hon. Geo. W. Bampton, Councilman. Hon. James K. Brush, Councilman. By Their Constituents.
Leaf: ca. 9-1/2" wide (note edge losses) x 14" high (reverse unprinted)
Edition size is unknown as well as distribution method.
Artist: Otto Knirsch, Hoboken & N.Y. (signed at lower right of vignette)
Printer/lithographer: A. Weingärtner's Lith. N.Y. [Weingartner]
The print was a commemorative celebrating the first Mayor and City Council of Hoboken which had been newly incorporated as a City on March 27, 1855. Elections were held shortly thereafter for the inaugural Mayor and City Council.
The date of May 7th is significant as it was the day of the first address by the Mayor to the City Council. (Clickener served as Mayor from 1855-1857; he was defeated in his re-election bid.)
Also significant is that the young German immigrant artist Knirsch (ca. 24 years old) was a resident of Hoboken at that time.
