Photograph
Digital image of photo of the Hoboken Playgrounds Field Band marching in 300 block of Washington Street, Hoboken, no date, probably 1928. Original image was ca. 3-1/4" wide x 2-1/4" high. Photographer is not known. People are not individually identified. See photo catalog 2005.078.0114 for what appears to be another print of the same image, but severely trimmed and much smaller. That image helps to date this print.
Julius Durstewitz may appear in this image. Which parade is not identified, but it was possibly the Decoration (Americanization) Day parade and thus in late May or early June. The band is in the nautical uniforms which seem to be from the late 1920's. Search for related images.
The sign for L[ouis]. Chasin (optometrist) seen in the right background was at 322 Washington Street (west side of Washington St.) and left of center is a sign for Solomon's Suits & Cloaks which was at 314 Washington St. This means they were marching north, thus this view is looking southwest.
Detail of center right image found on recto of leaf 24 (image 5 of 5) of Julius & Marie Durstewitz album, see primary record 2005.078.0100 for a description of the album and provenance. Note the verso of leaf twenty-four is blank. See related.
