Notes: 2009.016.0032: transcription of letters to Florence and Madeline Miller of 716 Bloomfield Street, Hoboken from Cadet Richard "Dick" Paganelli, Jr., Edgewood Arsenal, MD. Transcription of letter 1- Mon., Oct. 12/42 Dear Florence & Madeline, The "belated" cookies have been received and duely devoured. The sweater has done yeoman duty service since its arrival. In fact on cold night I wore it to bed, where it fit just as well. If I haven't mentioned it to you before, this place is slightly amazing. First I'm no enthusiatic about Chem. [Chemical] Warfare, hence I'm not tolerant enough. It seems they are mightly inconsiderate. For example, I'm in the 12th Class. There are only two more, the fifteenth being the last for awhile. The officer in the 11th class told me himself he was to to choose 18 men from his class to be dismissed. If he didn't they were going to pick 18 names indiscriminately. That constant threat of being thrown out plus the fact that there is practically no time for studying makes the [illegible] terrific. My timepiece informs me that lights are about to be turned out which is probably just as well. Love to Mother & thanks very much for both sweater and cookies. Dick [end letter 1] ------------------- transcription of letter 2- Nov. 17/42 Dear Florence Thanks for the letter and the medal. I like the chain very much, think I'll include my "Dog Tags," (metal identication tags) with medal. I most certainly wish you could teach me some math. right now when I need it most. Honestly, there's quite a bit of it here and if there's anything I know damn well I don't know it's math. Kindly do not do anything about the food situation. In first place I wouldn't have time to eat it, secondly, like the other time, I saw about two cookies, the other fellows ate the rest. That's all very well I know, but they're complete strangers, and I might add a bit annoying. I do not suppose that this will surprise anyone, but I love this place so much that I'm doing my best to get transferred elsewhere. At the moment though the cause looks lost. Love to Mother & Madeline thanks again and I hope you were were serious about the math. business. Dick New address. Cadet R.P. Co. M. 4th Plat. Regt. of Cadets E. Arsenal Md.
