Stereoview card: American Scenery. New York City. [Hoboken Ferry.] No publisher, no date, circa 1870-1890. 3-3/8" high x 6-7/8" wide. Reverse has holographic ink title "Hoboken Ferry" (appearing contemporary, certainly not modern) on back along with a printed label of seller. See notes.
The prints have rounded tops. Based on the "Hoboken Ferry" title on reverse, the view is probably west of a ferry terminal apparently on the west side of Manhattan that was either the Barclay Street or Twenty-third Street terminal (no signs are seen) which was a destination for the ferries that ran from Hoboken to New York. The elevated view also shows the docks and buildings on the west side of the Hudson River. At the top left corner of an image, is a ferry near a ferryhouse, that MAY have been the Hoboken Ferry Company terminal located at the southern end of Hoboken adjacent to the Delaware, Lackawanna & Western Railroad terminal. It could also be a terminal outside of Hoboken.
The date of the view is probably from the earlier part of the date range than later. The typography and dock views on the west bank (which became rail yards during the later part of the 19th C.) suggest the earlier period.
The printed label, 3/8" high x 5/8" wide, on the back: From 'C. Northrup', "Beehive" Bridgeport, Ct.

Notes: The general series title, "American Scenery," is printed on the front left. The area group title, "New York City," is printed to the right. (Cards with a similar typeface are known to have these titles printed opposite this and it is recorded as potentially useful for dating it in the future.) A possible publisher or issue is George Stacy, but it has not been established. Original or Copy: Original Status: OK Status By: dw Status Date: 2009-01-20
