Photograph
Photographic stereoview card: New York. Hoboken Ferry. No. 639.
No date, circa 1860 (see below).
3-1/4" high x 6-3/4" wide; arched top prints. Yellow paper front and back; front has hand printed title in ink under right image: "Hoboken Ferry." Back has imprinted title as above. No other publisher's markings or issuer noted as well the photographer not being indicated, but it is attributed to George Stacy of New York.
The scene is probably is apparently of the ferryhouse and docks on the west side of Hudson River in Hoboken with a view to lower Manhattan in New York City.
Photo 2014.013.0101 is another example of this stereocard where the titling is written differently on the reverse with "No. 351" whereas the card here is imprinted with "No. 639" on reverse.
The two named vessels seen are the sidewheeler "Transport" or "Transpont" and the "Phoenix" which was a sternwheeler. The Phoenix is a known Hoboken Ferry Company boat. It was built in 1825 or 1826 as the Faerie (or Fairy) Queen and renamed in 1851 as the Phoenix. It remained in service until 1855 or 1856 when abandoned. Report has been seen that it was not scrapped until 1860.
