Scope and ContentMagazine advertisements, six, for Log Cabin Syrup. One issued by Log Cabin Products Co., St. Paul, MN; others by General Foods Corporation [on behalf of its Log Cabin Products Division, Hoboken],1929-1949 or 1950. Clipped leaves from various magazine with full-page, full-color ads, various formats and sizes. Product's full name was Towle's Log Cabin Syrup. The syrup itself was made in Hoboken starting in 1928 or 1929 as the Log Cabin Products Division of the General Foods Corporation (but note that one ad has a can marked Log Cabin Syrup Division). Notable are the depictions of the distinctive log cabin shaped can and the changing graphics seen. Detail views of containers are shown from each ad. Ad 1: Ladies Home Journal, January 1929, page [39]; 10-1/2" x 13-5/8" high. Can depicted has the St. Paul, Minn. location for The Log Cabin Products Co. A request coupon printed at the lower right for a free copy of "Favorite Maple Recipes" also has the same name and address. While Hoboken is not mentioned, this ad helps with timeline of the company's transfer of operations to Hoboken as is seen in ad 2. Ad 2: Ladies Home Journal, December 1929, page [54]; 10-5/8" x 14" high. Can depicted still has the St. Paul, Minn. location and the company name as in ad 1, but the request coupon has the same name now with the Hoboken, New Jersey address. The free publication being offered, "Maple Delicacies" (this was copyright 1929; see archive copies), is new. Also at the lower left corner is a copyright notice, "[copyright symbol] 1929 G.F. Corp." This did not appear in ad 1, January, and thus establishes that General Foods took control of Log Cabin in 1929. Ad 3: The Saturday Evening Post, Feb. 18, 1939, page [4]; 10-1/2" x 13-5/8" high. Syrup can has text near the bottom edge, but it is not legible. Ad 4: The Saturday Evening Post, April 15, 1939, page [4]; 10-1/2" x 13-1/2" high. Can does have legible text printed near the bottom: Log Cabin Syrup Division of General Foods Corporation, Hoboken, N.J., U.S.A. Ad 5: unknown magazine, copyright 1940 in ad, no page number, 10" x 13-3/8" high. Can depicted has legible text at bottom edge: General Foods Corporation, Hoboken, N.J. Ad 6: unknown magazine; date likely 1949 or 1950; 9-1/4" x 13-1/4" high. Products depicted here are the syrup can and a emboss glass bottle with screw cap and printed label; neither one has Hoboken in the labeling. (Note: date estimated from ad on back for Old Golds cigarettes and featuring Bert Parks, promoting him and quiz show "Stop the Music" on Thursday nights on the American Broadcasting [Company] network.)
