Notes: 2010.054.0009, item 2: Ambassadors Link, Lipton Retirees Newsletter, Vol. II, Fall 1994, page 10: DO YOU REMEMBER by Edythe Masten, Retiree I'm sure many retirees remember the building shown here. It, of course, is the famous Lipton Hoboken building, home of the even more famous Lipton Tea, Soup and, perhaps surprising to some of you, Lipton Coffee. According to the late Carl Wood, former Executive Vice President of the company, it was an especially good blend of coffee but Sir Thomas preferred to concentrate on his tea. This is evident by the size of the sign Sir Thomas had erected on the roof of the building. Not only was it to be clearly visible from New York City but Sir Thomas wanted every passenger on every ship that sailed up and down the Hudson River to be aware of his product. As a result of Sir Thomas's prominent sign, many people believed that Lipton owned the building. Not so. Lipton rented only one-third. Standard Brands occupied the other two-thirds. It was the company's home from 1919 to 1963 when the offices were moved to Englewood Cliffs and production to Flemington, New Jersey. There may be some retirees who remember when Sir Thomas would arrive in his chauffeur driven limo at the Receiving Department in Hoboken, be driven onto the freight elevator and whisked to his office on the twelfth floor.
