Stereocard: Funeral procession of Major Christian Woerner(?) outside Odd Fellows Hall, 172-174 Washington St., Hoboken, no date, circa August 24 -26, 1881.
Stereo-opticon photographic card, 3-15/16" high x 7" wide. Reverse is blank; no publisher indicated.
While it is unstated for whom the funeral was being held, there are a great number of men in Civil War uniform lined up east of the hearse at the center. Woerner (1825-1881) died on August 22, 1881 in Hoboken and was buried at Hoboken Cemetery. He was saw action in Hoboken's Regiment A (Hexamer's Battery) as well as other units in the Civil War. A captain in that war, he became a Major in the reserves and headed a regiment that trained in Hoboken. Odd Fellows Hall was some base of operations. A sign with his name is seen on the first floor of Odd Fellows Hall, north end (on the south is a Billiards sign), where Christian Woerner Post, Sons of Veterans was known to be located.
It is possible that the funeral was for another prominent Army veteran.
