DescriptionPhotographic stereoview card: City. New York from Hoboken. No. 351. No date, circa 1860 (see below). 3-1/4" high x 6-3/4" wide; arched top prints. Front is blank, no titling. Back has contemporary ink inscribed title as above. No other publisher's markings or issuer noted as well the photographer not being indicated, but it is attributed to George Stacy of New York. Later pencil notation on back: Hoboken Stacy on the back. The scene is probably is apparently of the ferryhouse and docks on the west side of Hudson River in Hoboken with a view to lower Manhattan in New York City. Photo 2014.013.0021 is another example of this stereocard where the titling is imprinted on the reverse with "No. 639" whereas the card here is ink numbered "No. 351." The two named vessels seen are the sidewheeler "Transport" or "Transpont" and the "Phoenix" which was a sternwheeler. The Phoenix is a known Hoboken Ferry Company boat. It was built in 1825 or 1826 as the Faerie (or Fairy) Queen and renamed in 1851 as the Phoenix. It remained in service until 1855 or 1856 when abandoned.
