Photograph
Stereoview card: American Scenery. Hoboken. [Stevens Castle, Gatehouse or Gateway]] No place, publisher or date, circa 1890-1920.
3-7/16" high x 6-3/4" wide.
Front has holographic ink name of "Edna" at right in an adult hand; reverse has name "Edna Taft" in same hand plus a larger penciled name: Edna McGonigle. Also penciled code: V8912 (this is not believed to a be a series number.)
The mounting board has rounded corners. While imprinted on mount American Scenery and Hoboken on the front, it lacks any creator markings or printed label. It may have been a pirated image of the stereoview described below. Among the possible issuers were the American Scenery Co., New York, or George Stacy, but the series name was used by several makers.
The image is the same as photo 2005.053.0008, a labeled stereoview: Steven's Residence, Castle Point, Hoboken. Portion of Gateway and Grounds [Hoboken]. [NY], no date, ca. 1870's. Anthony's Stereoscopic Views. No. 6614. Published by E. & H.T. Anthony & Co., N.Y. See that record for a full description of the scene.
