Archive
Ticket sample: Delaware, Lackawanna & Western Railroad monthly commutation ticket between Mountain Lakes (& West Paterson) and New York, for May 1941. Form MC. Orange card stock, printed in black and red, two sides, 2-1/2" x 5-3/4" wide; three conductor's punches; inkstamped on reverse as noted below.
A two piece ticket with the right part being the monthly ticket. Diagonal security lines overprinted on ticket portion with station name "W. Paterson" in parentheses near the left side.
This ticket was also valid for passage between New York and Montclair, Madison or Murray Hill.
Tickets to or from New York required taking the railroad's ferry to or from Hoboken where the Lackawanna Terminal was located. The ferry fare was included in price of fares to or from New York. This is covered in the terms and conditions on the back which on this example is obscured by remains of adhesive and paper from a previous album mount (also some losses); thusly the "Sample" inkstamp on the reverse is only partially legible. The date is not available, but would have typically been within a few years and the bottom line is typically reads Rand McNally & Co. See archives 2011.005.0090 for a sample dated 1944 with the typical stamp.
Note also that the 1944 example is a three piece ticket as opposed to the two piece ticket here. The third piece was detached for the first ride, but on the 1941 example here, the conductor punched the sex of the rider (box at top right corner) and that covered the first ride.
