HOBOKEN HONORS 100 YEARS OF BASEBALL
HOBOKEN, N.J. - Hoboken paused for a baseball centennial celebration marking the first game of organized baseball reportedly played in this country today (June 19). Above, spectators view one of the floats as it passed near the plaque on Elysian Fields, commemorating the first game. Many prominent persons attended the 100th anniversary.

The view is northwest from Hudson Street towards Eleventh Street with Washington Street at the upper left. The photo was probably taken from the reviewing stand that was on Hudson at Eleventh Street, facing east. The plaque at right was on the center divider of 11th St. at Hudson St and was adjacent to the reviewing stand. It was dedicated on this day (a donation by Maxwell House Coffee, General Foods; their factory was on the main location of what was once Elysian Fields.) The float going west on 11th carried five panels, each honoring a member of the Baseball Hall of Fame.
Text on the plaque:
Baseball
On June 19, 1846 the first match game of baseball was played here on the Elysian Fields between the Knickerbockers and the New Yorks. It is generally conceded that until this time the game was not seriously regarded.
