Hand-operated portable clothesline used for hanging laundry indoors, no place (Hoboken), no date, ca. 1920-60. Beige painted sheet metal with flanges for wall mounting. 3" deep x 2-3/8" wide x 3-3/4" high. The metal case encloses a reel that holds a double-line cord (ca. 1/8" diameter) that is intended to be attached to a hook some distance away. A wooden reel handle on the side is used to pull in the lines when not in use. Back is stamped: Super Metal Mfg. Co., N.Y.C. Pat. App'd For.
Per curator: it came from an unidentified Hoboken building and was typical of the kind used by dwellers in single-room-occupancy hotels or boarding houses.
