Sepia tone photo of First Baptist Church interior, patriotic decoration, 9th & Bloomfield Sts., Hoboken, n.d., ca. 1908-1912.
Photograph
Sepia tone photo of the First Baptist Church interior decorated patriotically, Ninth and Bloomfield Streets, Hoboken, N.J., no date, circa 1908-1912.
4-3/4" high x 7" wide print on 7" x 9" photographer's mount. Photographer not indicated. Reverse has contemporary holographic ink identification: interior 1st Baptist Church, Hoboken, N.J.
The view of the sanctuary has patriotic decor with American flags and bunting. The large flag at upper center is a 46-star flag which was in use (legally) from July 4, 1908 to July 4, 1912. Other flags are 45-star flags which were used from 1896 to 1908.
The church would have celebrated during the 1908-1912 period its 65th anniversary in 1910, but there is no specific indication of that event or the purpose of the decoration. Official church history, archives 2002.028.0002, does not mention any event for 1910, but typically such an institution commemorated these benchmark occasions.
Note that the wall lighting sconces flanking the 46-star flag are gas fixtures (glass shade at top.)
While the photograph may have been taken by a professional photographer, the mounting of the print is amateurish with irregularly trimmed edges and paste stains at the edges.
