Photograph
Black-and-white photo of view south of factory buildings at Monroe and 13th St., Hoboken, no date, circa 1967-1968.
3-1/4" x 4-3/4" wide print. Photograph taken by donor Jack O'Brien (but not so marked.) Reverse has modern ink notations by O'Brien as recorded below.
An image that incoporates a very long view looking down Monroe Street. Taken from the Fourteenth Street Viaduct while standing above the railroad tracks that bordered the west side of Hoboken. A long train of empty hopper (gondola) cars probably used for coal is seen on a track. Other spurs and sidings are also seen at some of the industrial buildings.
Detail 1: Right of center in the background is the smokestack of Alco Gravure (Alco-Gravure) which was at Monroe St. covering the block from 9th to 10th Sts.; in the distance is the Cocomalt sign; also visible is Jackson Gardens, a public housing project.
Detail 2:In the right background is construction underway of a foundation structure (part of which serves as its parking garage) for the Doric apartment building in Union City which was in the heights above 11th and Monroe Streets. The Doric website states it was built in 1969 (probably meaning year that it opened), thus this early construction helps to date this photo as 1967 or 1968.
O'Brien notes on the back: 13th [&] Jackson? Jersey City Hill [cataloger's note: Jersey City Heights and Union City] over RR tracks

This photo is in a group of 23 in this accession which are the same size prints and apparently taken during the same period; none are dated, but automobile models and other elements seen in some images suggest the date range.
