Notes: Stereocard / stereoview 2014.021.0022 text on back ==== It is the forward deck of one of the great North German Lloyd steamers that we see so crowded with steerage passengers. The Konigin Luise has steamed away from Bremen, and these are North Sea waters. Some of these men and women are German-Americans returning to the adopted country after a visit to the old home, but most are making the voyage for the first time. The passage, including food, costs from $20 to $30. The steamship line is taxed 50 cents for each emigrant, and, in case any one of the would-be Americans is refused entrance at New York, the steamship company must bring him back to Germany at its own expense. In 1901 this one line carried 101,384 steerage passengers to America, though not all were of German birth. Between 1820 and 1900 there were over 5,000,000 Germans who did seek new homes in America. Many of these emigrants intend to settle in New York City, where there are nearly as many Germans as in all Berlin. Many are bound for Cincinnati, Chicago, Milwaukee and the great northwest. As soon as this vessel has passed the quarantine station in New York harbor, agents of the United States government will assume jurisdiction over these men and women and subject them to a rigid examination in order to sift out the undesirable. Each one of these passengers will have to answer the inspector’s questions as to age, occupation, last residence, ability to read and write, intended destination, possession of through tickets and how obtained, amount of money on hand, relatives in America, condition of health, whether under contract for labor, whether having any record as a pauper or a criminal, etc., etc. From Notes of Travel, No. 29.
