Notes: archives 2012.004.0044 ==== Mayor's Office Hoboken, Oct 10th, 1871 To the Council of the City of Hoboken Gentlemen. When as the sad news has been spread over the Country, that, a large portion of the great City of the West, the City of Chicago, has been visited by one of the most terrible conflagrations on record whereby many thousands of people are left homeless and in a destitute and [?] condition, and the appeal comes to us for help and assistance, and I think that we should heed this call upon us and contribute our share, and do all in our power to assist, and relieve this suffering people - I would therefore recommend to your honorable body, to take such action as you may deem judicious at this most critical moment, toward relieving the distress of the suffering by a [?] contriution to the fund now being raised in the unions, cities and towns in this state and throughout the country. Yours respectfully F.L. Schmersahl, Mayor ----- Communication from His Honor of the Mayor calling attention of Council as to the destitution of the citizens of Chicago caused by the last fire.
