Scope and ContentAnnouncement and invitation August 4, 1876 to City of Hoboken by N.J. Centennial Commission to attend a reception held by Governor Joseph D. Bedle at the State Building, August 24, 1876. Two printed items. The year was the United States Centennial and the event was related to New Jersey Day, August 24 at the Centennial Exposition in Fairmount Park, Philadelphia. The "State Building" stated in the printed items was the New Jersey State Building (or Pavillion) on Belmont Avenue at the Exposition. Text is in notes. Abraham Browning of Camden was the speaker listed in the announcement. He is credited for giving New Jersey the nickname the Garden State. According to Alfred Heston's 1926 two-volume book Jersey Waggon Jaunts, Browning called New Jersey the Garden State while speaking at the Philadelphia Centennial exhibition on New Jersey Day (August 24, 1876). Notes: archives 2012.004.0056 ==== [announcement] New Jersey Headquarters Fairmount Park, August 4, 1876 The United States Centennial Commissioners have requested the Governors of the several States to appoint some distinguished citizen to prepare an address illustrating the political and social history of his State, to be delivered at intervals during the present exhibition, of the results of a century's history. In accordance with this plan, which is to embrace, if possible, the whole country, His Excellency Governor Bedle has selected the Hon. Abraham Browning as the Orator for New Jersey, and his address will be delivered at the Judges' Hall on the 24th inst., at 11 o'clock, A. M. But in view of the role our State played in the great drama of 1776, and of the high position she now occupies in the great commemorative exposition of 1876, it is designed to make the 24th emphatically the Jerseymen's day of the Exhibition. Accordingly, His Excellency the Governor will receive at the New Jersey State Building between 1 and 3 o'clock, P. M., and to this reception, and the hearing of the address, a cordial invitation is hereby extended to the Mayors and Municipal Officers of all our cities and towns, to all the editors and proprietors of our State newspapers, to all citizens of the State, to all natives of the State now resident elsewhere, and to all whose interests and whose hearts make them in any sense with us, and of us, Jerseymen.
