Adolph Lankering, Mayor August 26, 1903 To the Council:- Gentlemen:- The report of the Board of Appeals Commissioners which will be submitted to you at to-night's meeting of your Honorable Body, I am informed will show among numerous reductions in the ratables of property in this City the enormous reduction of $1,000.000 in the assessed valuation of the property of the North German Lloyd Steamship Company. This reduction has caused general consternation in as much as it exemplifies, what a majority of the Appeals commission are able to accomplish when misled or under influence not in harmony with the interest of the city. They may upset the very foundation of the City's finances if permitted to interfere in such reckless manner the valuations of the Board of Assessors. In this case the Appeals Commissioners were acquainted with all the facts and figures which justified the assessment and every detail, which led to the valuation was gone into very carefully. There was nothing left for them to do, but to sustain the action of the Assessor's and leave the assessment undisturbed. Assurances to this effect on their part were given, but not realized. The North German Lloyd have been treated most generously by the people of Hoboken and receive grants of great value without any compensation to the City. The least we may expect in return that they share in the expenditure of our administration like any other taxpayer and it is our duty to the many small property owners to see that the Corporations will not impose upon them. Therefore I wish to advise to refuse the confirmation of the reduction on the North German Lloyd property. Yours respectfully, A.
