Notes: archives 2012.004.0067 ==== October 21st, 1893 To the Council of the City of Hoboken Gentlemen:- Many complaints have been received by me during the few months on the deplorable condition of that portion of our City near the present outlet of the Ravine Road sewer. That sewer has been a constant menace to the health of a large portion of our City for many years. Although legislation was obtained to compel Jersey City to repair this nuisance, I find that every [sic - very] little progress has been made. Sometime ago I forwarded to the Corporation Counsel of Jersey City a letter, of which I enclose a copy, complaining of the neglect of that City; I am just in receipt of his answer thereto which I herewith send you, together with the enclosure therein mentioned. I am happy to say that the authorities of our sister City have at last realized the importance of this work, and that within a short time the nuisance will be effectially [sic - effectively] abated. Notwithstanding the allusion contained in the letter of the Corporation Counsel of Jersey City, suggesting that Hoboken should bear part of the expense of this sewer, I feel justified in saying that no part of this nuisance is created by the City of Hoboken; all of the sewage comes from Jersey City on the Heights and should be taken care of by Jersey City without expense to the City of Hoboken; if Hoboken were in any degree liable for the nuisance, I would favor contribution on our part, but as this is not the case, I shall insist upon having this work done by Jersey City, at its own expense. I am however in favor of permitting that City to take all reasonable time to complete the work, and only ask that it be proceeded with. While I am on this subject I would respectfully call your attention to the condition of the sewers in the meadow district of our city. We ought not to expect Jersey City to relieve us of one nuisance unless we are willing to relieve ourselves of another. Legislation was procured last winter by which a proper sewer can be built through Ferry Street to the River outlet; such a sewer would be of great benefit to every property in the City. While I am not prepared at the present time to propose any define plan for this work I am of opinion that your Board should take the initiative, and have the plans prepared, unless the ones now before you are found to be satisfactory. Yours respectfully, Lawrence Fagan, Mayor ---- Communication from His Honor Mayor Fagan enclosing correspondence with Jersey City authorities relative to the Ravine Road Sewer nuisance.
