Cabinet photo of 3 firemen posed playing cards in photographer's studio, Hoboken, n.d., ca. 1885-1890.
Photograph
Cabinet photograph of a three firemen men posed playing cards in photographer's studio, Hoboken, no date, circa 1885-1890.
4-1/4" x 6-1/2" photographer's mount, gilt beveled edge; print displayed long direction. Photograph taken by C.[Conrad] Magnus, 252 Washington St., Hoboken, N.J. (imprint in lower margin). (Note: 252 Washington St. is an 'old number' that became modern 628 Washington St. in 1892.)
Reverse is blank.
The trio is seated at a bar table with beer in glasses. Note the moveable background panel in the studio. A study in recreation.
The center man wears a fireman's helmet of Company 1 and a lapel badge on a jacket that suggests it is part of a uniform. Firemen were volunteers in the era (until 1891) and organized into several companies.
Men are not identified, but according to the seller of this photograph, it was from family papers associated with a Joe Haggerty and they stated he was one of the men seen, a "chief" as they stated. (A Joseph Haggerty is known to have been a volunteer fireman in Hoboken and enrolled in the Association of Exempt Firemen of the City of Hoboken; his position as whether a chief or other officer has not been established.)
The other two men are wearing suits, but also have a badge on their left lapel.
An uncommon use of the cabinet photo format with a horizontal mount.
