Photograph
Black-and-white photo of construction of Pier 5 (formerly pier 14) at the Bethlehem Steel Shipyard, Hoboken Division, Sept. 18, 1957. Pier 14 was acquired in 1949 and was reconstructed and reduced in width for shipyard use and called Pier 5. Photo looking from the northeast was taken by Davis Studios
Note the new pier head is complete. The base of the gantry crane is seen at the top right. A derrick barge appears to be part of removal of old wooden pilings. The vessel in drydock no. 4 at the left is the "World Jury." Several of the shipyard's buildings can be seen including the firehouse, repair garage, north warehouse and the sheet metal shop.
