Collections Item Detail
Coaster, 6, issued by Elysian Savings & Loan Assn., (Hoboken), n.d, ca. 1960s-1970s.
Object/Artifact
Stacking coasters, set of 6, issued by Elysian Savings & Loan Association, (Hoboken), no date, circa 1965-1975. Navy blue molded plastic, pentagonal shaped, 3-1/4" across; embossed silver foil round decal on top center with enlarged image of a 1937 Indian Head nickel coin.
A promotional item used as part of a customer loyalty or reward program. It is presumably a stock style offered by a novelty manufacturer with custom imprinting.
Bottom has silver foil stamping of 'Elysian Savings & Loan Assn.' inside circular text, 'Your Friendly Savings & Loan Association.' City nor address appears on the object.
It was located at 401 Washington St., Hoboken. Bank was known at one time as Elysian Federal Savings & Loan Assn.
The 1937 nickel also known as a Buffalo nickel was replaced in 1938 with the Jefferson nickel. There were 1938 Indian Head nickels so this was not a depiction of the last year it was minted. Significance or purpose of using this coin is unknown. The 1937 date is not considered relevant to the date range when the coasters were probably issued.
