Holographic letter, 8 pp. with envelope, written by Simeon Martinez to Miss Etta Burhorn, Institute Zollikofer, Romanshorn, Switzerland, Sept. 12, 1886. Printed Hoboken stationery of Simeon Martinez, M.E., 145 Hudson St., Hoboken, N.J., U.S.A.
Martinez is replying to a letter from Burhorn. She seems to have been traveling in Europe and is at a finishing school. He discusses Hoboken life including Waring's New Theatre, yacht races (the English "Galatea" and the American "Mayflower"), mosquitoes, a sea serpent, etc. He is apparently going back to Panama for some work or business (he does refer to a "headquarters"). The envelope has an inscription "P.S.S. Arizona." which could be "Panama" or "Panamanian" Steam Ship. The "M.E." after his name may be for "Mechanical Engineer" because he does refer to an "Institute" where he received this letter (Stevens Institute of Technology was in Hoboken).
Places referred to include "Mr. Eskine's ribbon mill on the Hill"; "Mr. O'Connor's stationery store on Washington St."; "342 Washington St."[old number]; "Thalia Theatre"; "Waring's New Theatre".
