Clothesline pole formerly in backyard of house near Connors School, Hoboken. N.d. 1940s onward?
Object/Artifact
Wood clothesline pole formerly in backyard of house near Connors School, Hoboken. Turned weathered wood (evidence of white paint especially on lower half) circa 6-1/2" diameter x 6'-6" high. Ball top with two 1-1/2" diameter through holes in straight turned section near top. Iron hook hardware for rope clothesline or a clothesline pulley. Poor condition.
Laundry lines were once an essential site feature found in Hoboken backyards and were seen in large quantities from certain viewpoints (usually from numbered streets or out windows on the backside of apartment buildings). They have quickly disappeared in the last two decades. The decoratively turned post or column here, while short and obviously intended for use at the ground level, is uncommon, but not untypical. (Most clotheslines ran to the tall, plain electric or telephone utility poles that existed behind buildings especially those used by people living on upper floors.)
Wood is rotted near base from ground installation and is considered as very poor condition. Other dry rot present.
