B+W photos of John J. Grogan (foreground) of Hoboken holding strike sign, no place, no date
Photograph
Black-and-white photos of John J. Grogan (foreground) of Hoboken holding strike sign, no place, no date; possibly at Bethlehem Steel Fore River Shipyard, Quincy, Mass. in the late 1930's. Two prints: print 1, 6-1/2" x 8-1/2" wide black-and-white print, darkened (probably framed without glass; tobacco smoke) with water damage, reverse has pencil notation, but no information about image; print 2, 5" x 7" high black-and-white print, good condition, reverse has pencil notation "Quincy."
Note: prints 1 & 2 are the same image varying in scope as printed, but print 2 is not a copy made from print 1. While print 2 does not have the right side of the image as seen in print 1; the top edge shows more of the building than in print 1 plus many of the defects in print 1 are not visible in print 2. Print 2 is presumed to have been made later and is probably a copy print made from a extant print or negative in better condition than print 1.
Grogan's sign reads: This Yard Is On Strike. Please Respect Our Picket Lines.
Grogan is best associated with this shipyard from the fifteen month long strike that started in 1960 by the union of which he was the leader. Although undated, details in this image suggest it is not from 1960's, but much earlier. This photo shows Grogan's apparent youth and the clothing styles which suggests that this image is from circa 1937 (Grogan would have been 23) when a court decision enhanced the shipyard workers union at Quincy. Also on a billboard in the background is a Chevrolet automobile advertisement, although not sharp, does seem to depict a late 1930's car rather than one from 1960.
