Document: Petition from John Manion for an appointment as sluice gate keeper to City of Hoboken, May 8, 1883. Holographic ink, 7-3/4" wide x 29" long. PDF on file.
Manion, a resident of Hoboken since 1850, was applying for a position that related to operating gates in the city's drainage and sewer system. The gates were routinely opened and closed for runoff and other drainage requirements which had to be coordinated with tidal movements of the Hudson River.
Twenty eight local men signed the petition attesting to his worthiness for appointment.Their local address is included; they are "old" street numbers. Legible names are in people field. The cover title panel has the file endorsements of August Grassmann and W.J. Ringer(?)
