Photograph
Black-and-white photo negative of Hudson Hut, YMCA, no date, circa 1919. Nitrate negative, no notch codes; 2-3/4" high x 4-5/8" wide. Photographer not indicated. Titled in negative image at left; numbers do not appear to be a date code, but a job / image number.
View is east of the exterior of the main building erected by the Y.M.C.A. on the eastern part of Hudson Square (Stevens) Park where the Little League baseball field is at present. At the left is a sign on a pier shed in the distance. There were other smaller buildings built here related to the 'Y' Hut that would have probably blocked that view, so this image is probably from 1919.
The Hut was for operated for soldiers and sailors involved in the U.S. Army Port of Embarkation and Debarkation duties at the Hoboken piers and at other locations in Hoboken. Note in the detail image showing the sign over the main entrance, "Hudson Hut," there is also lettered sign on the utility pole to the left of the entrance: U.S. Government Property. No Trespassing."
