B+W photo of news bulletin window at Jersey Observer newspaper offices, Newark St., Hoboken, n.d., [Jan. 6, 1937.
Photograph
Black-and-white photo of people gathered to read headline bulletins in a display case outside the Jersey Observer newspaper offices, Newark St. (between Bloomfield and Washington Streets), Hoboken, no date [January 6, 1937.] 8" x 10" photo. Photographer is not identified, but presumably it was a photograph taken by the newpaper. Reverse is blank. None of the people are identified
A typical scene in the era when newspapers would essentially provide the service of presentlng late-breaking news prior to an edition being published with the story.
Seen is a window display case with late breaking news printed ("Wed. P.M." stated at top) in large type on a central sheet of paper with three photographs in frames on each side. A crowd of men and women have gathered to read it. The first headline is for the death of Brother Andre at age 91, a founder of Mount Royal. This information allowed the photograph to be dated.
The text is rather truncated in the style of a teletype or newswire as typical of the era. Other headlines, only partially legible, included:
-Jersey City, piers quiet as two ships sail
-Meeting arranged in hope of averting motor strike
-Congress counts electoral vote [Presidential election of 1936] hears President's message
-Big incomes...___ie [movie] stars revealed at W____on.
-(Baseball) [T]ravis Jackson, signed...contract to.. [Travis Jackson, played 1923-1936, N.Y. Giants, National League, retiring from baseball in 1936; in the Baseball Hall of Fame; the text is probably about the signing of his replacement.]
Jersey Observer name is prominently seen plus lettering on the windows: Want Advts. Received Here.
