TUNNEL SPEEDS INTERSTATE TRAFFIC
FOUR-MINUTE MOTORING FROM WEEHAWKEN,N.J., TO MIDTOWN NEW YORK WILL BE POSSIBLE WITH OPENING DEC. 22 OF THE FIRST TUBE OF THE $75,000,000 TWO-WAY LINCOLN TUNNEL UNDER THE HUDSON RIVER. BUILT AT A COST OF $42,000,000 AND LIVES OF 14 WORKMEN, THE FIRST (SOUTH) TUBE EXTENDS 8,215 FEET AND AT ITS DEEPEST POINT IS 75 FEET BELOW SURFACE OF THE HUDSON. THIS PICTURE SHOWS THE INTERIOR OF THE TUBE TO BE OPENED NEXT MONTH. THE SECOND TUNNEL IS EXPECTED TO BE READY FOR USE LATE IN 1940.
