Notes: Headquarters Major Chr. [Christian] Woerner Post, No. 81, Department of New Jersey, Grand Army of the Republic, Odd Fellow Hall, Hoboken, N.J. Oct. 20th, 1884. To the honorable the Mayor and Common Council. Gentlemen - By a resolution of the above organization I have been instructed to draft this communication. We respectfully be to inform you of the objects of our order, first; to aid and assist all honorable discharged soldiers, sailors and marines, who fought for the maintenance of our Union; to provide for the widows and orphans of the same; to take charge of the remains of our late comrades and to commemorate the deeds of those who died that the nation might live. Our number is fast diminishing, and in a very short time memory alone will remain. We believe that our services in the past warrant us to ask you honorable body to grant us such considerations as is granted to Post of the Grand Army, in adjoining cities, viz: "To Provide Major Woerner Post No. 81, Department of New Jersey, Grand Army of the Republic with a suitable room for meeting semi-monthly." We are now quartered at Odd Fellows' Hall, at an annual rental of $90.00, we find our funds dwindling down slowly but surely, and if our request meets with your approbation, the amount now paid for rent could be devoted to the greatest object of aour association - CHARITY. I remain, Gentlemen, in behalf of Major Woerner Post, Yours Respectfully, A.H. Schmann, Adjutant. Status: OK Status By: dw Status Date: 2012-08-06
