Object/Artifact
Dallas trademark oil gaugers' inage 75 foot steel tape measure on reel made by Keuffel & Esser Company, New York & Hoboken, N.J., issued circa 1945-1960. Steel tape, 75 feet x 1/2" wide, Keco (brand name) finish (bright steel markings on black etched background); swivel snap hook end at circa 9" for plumb bob; stainless steel frame reel with self-locking crank handle (tape length stamped on crank outside); nameplate with manufacturer's name on reel. Wood handle with black painted finish (no name stamped on handle as depicted in catalogue.) Overall dimensions: 10-1/4" x 4-1/2" x 1-1/2".
With: brass oil guagers plumb bob, 1" diameter x 6-3/4" long, marked "K&E Co., N.Y. 7896-3" Marked in inches and eighths, plus section next to scale riffled to hold oil.
Tape markings divided in feet, inches and eighths. K&E name also on the tape at 1 foot 2 inch mark.
Intended for use in measuring the contents of oil tanks or other storage containers. The graduations on the tape are designed to incorporate the length of the bob, zero at the bottom, and swivel snap, so readings on the tape itself start at about 9 inches, thus the use of the term "inage."
This item generally corresponds to the 50 foot tape sold as 7722 in in 40th and 42nd edition catalogues. Fifty feet is the longest length offered in the catalogue. The one here at 75 feet is presumed to be a special order.
K&E main offices and factory were in Hoboken during the period when this item was manufactured.
