Archive
Lithographic color portrait of Lillian Russell, no date, circa 1890-1900; mounted on leaf with 1990's caption by Jim Hans detailing Russell's relationship to Hoboken. Print 6-3/8" x 9" high; source of image not indicated, but apparently a later printing of a late 19th century painting of Russell. It appears only to illustrate the caption and was not intended to depict her as she may have appeared in Hoboken.
Printed caption by Hans:
Lillian Russell, the world famous actress and singer during the later part of the 19th and early 20th Century, was married in Hoboken in 1885. She was married, again in Hoboken in 1894, in a house on Garden Street (between 5th and 6th Streets). For many years Miss Russell was the foremost singer of operettas in America. Born in Clinton, Iowa, she was billed as the English Ballad Singer at her first appearance on Broadway at Tony Pastor's Theatre, on November 22, 1880. Besides being married four times, Lillian Russell for forty years, was the companion of businessman "Diamond Jim" Brady, who showered her with gifts of diamonds and gemstones and supported her exuberant lifestyle. The two were often seen visiting Hoboken and the Duke's House, on Hudson Place near the Hoboken Ferry.
