Collections Item Detail
Stein with lid: Coburger Bier. R. Naegeli's Sons. Hoboken, N.J. N.d., ca.1890-1914.
Object/Artifact
Lidded beer stein: Coburger Bier. R. Naegeli's Sons. Hoboken, N.J. No date, circa 1890-1914 (possibly a later reproduction - see below.)
Cream stoneware; decorative lettering in black with shield monogram (for the beer brand) in reddish brown; hinged stepped dome metal cover with thumb lever. Bottom has no maker's mark, only a number: 10. Overall, 3-3/8"diameter x 4-3/4" high.
A rather small stein in terms of capacity. Light crackle in the glaze both interior and exterior. The scale of the item, the inset base, and the general freshness of the appearance strongly suggest that this item is not an original from the period.

Rudolf Naegeli was once an "Importer & Sole Agent for Coburger-Actien Bier" (thus the monogram C A B for Coburger-Actien Bier on the stein) with the business apparently carried on by his sons. The family operated a hotel, Naegeli's Hotel, at Third and Hudson Streets which as typical of such businesses had a bar (saloon / beer garden) and restaurant.
