Ad: "The Independence Goes to Sea. New American Export Liner and Sister Ship, the Constitution..." Full page advertisement by Bethlehem Steel Co. in "Finance Week" magazine, page [53], March 16, 1951. Leaf removed from magazine, 8" x 11" high.
Aerial photo of the S.S. Independence and photo of the engine room control panel. Text promoted the company's Shipbuilding Division and notes that the vessels were constructed by it at the Quincy, Mass. shipyard. It also noted that the the two vessels were the first with shipwide air conditioning and were were the fastest passenger vessels "ever built"; also designed to be easily converted to a troop ship if needed.
These ocean liners operated from the American Export Lines piers in Hoboken and were in the Bethlehem Steel Hoboken Shipyard on various occasions for repairs or other service.
