Cocomalt Big Book of Comics Featuring Joe Penner. Book No. 1. A Cocomalt premium issued by R.B. Davis Co., Hoboken, N.J.: "Entire contents copyright 1938 Harry 'A' Chesler, N.Y."; issued 1939. Cocomalt, made in Hoboken by R.B. Davis, was the sponsor of a radio show starring Joe Penner that aired on CBS from October 4, 1936 to June 26, 1938. It was called "The Penners of Park Avenue" (other references have titled it "The Park Avenue Penners".) Penner was a comedian best known for the catchphrase "Wanna Buy a Duck?" (or "Do you want to buy a duck?") He died in 1941. (Note: his contemporary, Groucho Marx, used a similar line.)
Cover art shows Penner, a can of Cocomalt and a musical band of six dwarves. Cover art signed by "Biro" who was Charles Biro. Chesler (actually Harry Chesler, Sr.) was a comic book publisher whose studio created the publication for R.B. Davis.
It is called "Book No. 1", but it was only a one-time publication. While copyrighted 1938 and the radio show ran to mid-1938, references for the issue date of the book usually state 1939.
A racist depiction of an African holding a sign card titled "Book No. 1" is seen.
