Notes: Archives 2012.004.0071 ==== Mayor's Office Hoboken, N.J. July 29th, 1890 To the Council. Gentlemen By the authority of an act of the Legislature you have over two months and a half ago, appointed a Building Inspector in the person of our Chief Engineer of the Fire Department at a salary of $1200 per annum. Said officer has been voted his pay for two months and a half and he has received it; yet he has not been able to perform the duties of his office properly however through no fault of his own, but simply because the council failed to prepare and adopt the proper ordinances, whereby the duties, powers and responsibilities of said office are defined and under which he is authorized to act. Not knowing upon whom rests the blame for the delay, through which pay away $100 00/100 per month without receiving a proper equivalent in return. I herewith earnestly request your honorable Body to instruct the proper committee, in conjunction with the Corporation Attorney to move in this matter with all due diligence, as the urgency of the case requires an efficient administration of said office under suitable regulations will be of corresponding benefit to our city and under the same said office may even be made self sustaining.
