Five-page word-processor letter, signed, from Joseph J. Finnerty to Museum with reminiscences of Hoboken, Scottsdale, AZ, April 29, 2004. Five 8-1/2" x 11" leaves, laser printed one side.
Finnerty has titled his pages "Store of Memories." His childhood memories from the 1930's and 1940's when his family lived at 807 Washington and later 825 Washington St.
(He turned 21 in 1948 so he was born in 1927, graduated from Demarest High School probably about 1945, attended Stevens Institute after high school; member of the Chi Phi fraternity.)
He mentions a number of candy, ice cream and soda shops: Schnackenberg's, Shortmeyer's (predecessor of Abel's), Abel's, Umlands, Kidorf's Drug Store, John's Candy Store. Also mentions an A & P at Sixth and Washington Sts. Family patronized Dabekow's Grocery (across the street from their home) for some of their food shopping, apparently mostly for seafood); meats were bought from Frankfurter's Meat Market on Ninth and Bloomfield Sts. Meissner's Bakery was next to Dabekow's and "tiny candy store operated by a Jewish couple and their daughter" was next to that. Also across the street from where they lived was the Eighth Street Tavern (still in business) and a music or record store. Also used Ritchie's Vegetable shore, Ninth and Washington Sts.
Father operated a saloon during 1920's prohibition called "The Hole" on Newark Street between Washington and River Sts. After prohibition was repealed, he opened "The Liberty Bar" on Second and Washington Sts.
Also mentions Topps baseball cards and 'flipping' for them; stone arch at Eighth and Hudson Sts. where students of SSPP (Saints Peter and Paul R.C. School?) would celebrated the end of the school year by throwing their ink bottles at the gate which had been blackened already from bonfires of Christmas trees by his fraternity next to the gate.
